Commissioner-at-Large  

Commissioner Gio Tingson traces his roots in public service to his grandfather, Gregorio J. Tingson, who was a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention and a Commissioner in the Constitutional Commission of 1986. Sharing his grandfather’s passion for service and through his student leadership, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III appointed Commissioner Gio as Commissioner-at-Large to the National Youth Commission, with the youth Commissioner commencing his term last June 16, 2011.

He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in 2010 with a degree in A.B. Philosophy and a minor in Development Management.  In his senior year, he was the President of the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola, the university’s student council, and was bestowed with the Loyola Schools Award for Most Outstanding Individual for SERVICE and Excellence.  Among his cherished feats as a student leader was being a coordinating head for Task Force Ondoy, creating a more efficient budget approval process in student funds, leading the formulation of a mid-term youth agenda among the Ateneo universities, and setting off the Ateneo Task Force 2010

Extending his leadership experience outside the campus, he was Chairperson of the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines and External Vice President for the Union of Catholic Student Councils. He attributes his aptitude in student leadership to his background as a student and young practitioner of Organization Development.

In the Commission, Gio serves as the Chairperson for the Committees on (1) Education and (2) Employment and Social Entrepreneurship due to his unparalleled advocacies in issues pertaining to Students Rights and Welfare (STRAW), access to and quality of education, a national action plan for youth employment and migration, and most importantly security of tenure or the struggle against contractualized work for young people.

With these weighty advocacies, he refreshes himself with travelling, reading books and playing basketball. In what he says was his past life, he donned up the blue and white jersey for the Ateneo Blue Eaglets basketball team for three years, serving as team captain in his senior high school year and continued to serve as one of the coaches of the Eaglets for two years in college. Indeed, this Commissioner-at-large – pun intended – played Center not only by virtue of his height and might but also by his leadership.
